16% increase in summer 2023 flight bookings compared to 2019

Summer vacations to The Bahamas and the Caribbean are increasingly popular, and a new article from Bloomberg explains why the old idea of a low season in these islands is a thing of the past.

The article by Lebawit Lily Germa cited a March 2023 report for the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association that found a 48% increase in booked flights for June to August 2023 compared to the same period in 2019.

While the summers had been slower as the weather there became hot and humid, the article quoted an official who said things began to change with the COVID-19 pandemic as Americans couldn’t travel to Europe for summer vacations and instead visited the Caribbean. Remote work schedules were also said to be a factor as people can vacation longer — and not just during peak travel times.

According to FowardKeys Air Ticket Data, as of April 5, the 10 most-booked summer 2023 destinations over summer 2019 included The Bahamas, which posted a 16% increase for the season over those three years.
