Brief History of The Bahamas

When Christopher Columbus arrived in North America, one of the first things he did was enslave and ship the indigenous people of The Bahamas (Lucayans) to Hispaniola. The islands were almost completely deserted until the Eleutherian Adventurers, English colonists from Bermuda, arrived in the early 1700s.

The Bahamas was made a British Crown Colony in 1718, with thousands of American loyalists moving there after the US Revolutionary War, along with enslaved African people and their descendants who worked on plantations until slavery was halted in 1834. Many enslaved people moved to Bahamas after that date to live freely. The country became governmentally independent in 1973, and is led by a prime minister, becoming one of the richest countries in the Americas.
